ET-11: Enthusiasm

On Sunday Anandji told me to go Ashram and take the relevant picture to complete the website. I was reluctant but finally decided to go there. As I made up my mind I thought why not I ask some Executive trainee to come with me. I never met them, but I talked to two boys. They were very excited to know about the ongoing social activities.
Harsh and Diwakar told all forty ETs of his batch would come on their call. Then I suggested them to call only twelve ETs.
After spending one day at Sewa Kunj with children, they all felt very obliged and desired to do much more things for the children in future.

Disciplined children impressed Vartika Mahila Mandal

After listening the activities of Sewa Kunj Ashram, senior members of Vertika Mahila Mandal were very eager to visit the ashram with the children of Bal Bhawan. I had a half an hour meeting with them at Bhal Bhawan itself.
Contrary to previous year experience with the motto of Vartika Mahila Mandal, I was impressed to see the progressive outlook of members. They all wanted to do more than only organizing dance programs. They all looked conscious for the better study and career of children of Bal Bhawan.

As I was about to leave, I asked them to visit the Ashram first and observe what they could do and how they would handle their children at Ashram.

Their experience at Ashram was very positive and they became emotional to see the disciplined life of children. They immediately planned to make a trip for their own children.

Ban "Ramleela"

"We are the descendants of Ravan. He was our God. We should make temple to worship Ravan."
This is the story framed by a teacher in a primary school in a village named Bhalphari. This village is located in a remote area of Sonbhadra district, completely cut-off from modern world. No officers, not common people from cities etc. are visiting these areas.

The large population of this area belongs to Gaud Janjati. They all are illiterate and makes their living in traditional ways mostly based on jungle and agricultural produce. In such a scenario, one teacher was appointed in a primary school located in that village. That teacher belongs to Roberts Ganj, a small city in Sonbhadra District. He belongs to the same community as the villagers are.

Attaching the sentiment of caste, he was able to misguide people and misdirected them. They falsely spread wrong idea and became successful in making people believe in his theory of Ravana being their ancestor. Exactly I am not aware, he also has shown them wrong hope of getting right of jungle based on this theory. Because of his effort, he was able to convince people of three-four neighbouring villages also.

On the occasion of this Durga Puja (2011), they planned to attack one village for not allowing them celebration of Ramleela and burning the effigy of Ravana by Rama. Although they got beaten by their own villagers, supporter of Rama. The issue went to local government. They all went on "Dharna" at district headquarter for their demand.

That particular teacher is of very violent nature. Earlier there was one accident happened in that village. He induced youth and they burnt the bus. Later they were arrested.

May the concern is not alarming for us. But given the situation, if this idea get fed in the mind of common people of these areas, the day is not far when a large supporter will start making their voice against Rama. Under pressure from intellectuals, human rights etc. Indian Gov. has to ban celebration of Ram Leela. We know such things may happen in India.

300 students wished to study at Sewa Kunj Ashram

This year 500 people came at Sewa Kunj Ashram in Guardian meeting and entrance test day at SewaKunj from all across the Sonbhadra District. This is much larger crowd than that of previous year which numbered 230.

About 300 students appeared in the test for admission.

The intake of students is not only on the basis of test and interview. Some other factors are also kept in mind. These are:

1. There are fourteen kind of tribal community in Sonbhadra. If there is lesser number of or not any student from some community then we are trying to include some of these tribal children.
2. If there are not any students from remote, inaccessible village, we are taking at least one from that village.
3. Some students who are good in archery, we are selecting such students.
4. This time three students were not good in study, but they are excellent in traditional music. They are selected.
5. It seems unusual, but about 20 percent children are taken from the family of effective people of village or community and the rest are from common mass. Effective people may help in spreading in their village easily. They might play critical role in spreading awareness among the masses and will help in smooth running of other programs.

This year we have kept the capacity of SewaKunj Ashram same with eight new entrants replacing the passed out students. The rest about forty two were sent to other hostels of the state.

Hope you all people will help in raising resources to run the Ashram well and make the education more effective qualitatively.

Roof Repairing work at Sewa Kunj Ashram

As we all know that previous year students had to share dormitory as well class room in the same room because of water seepage from room in rainy season, this problem has been sorted out this year.

It cost more than one and half lack rupees. Exact amount is about to be estimated as work is already going on.

Ambedkar Jayanti@ashram

Although we forgot to mention this person when engineers from Rihand Nagar and Shakti Nagar gathered at Ashram. The day (14 April 2011) was really auspicious.

I always wished all with social inclination should visit places where development work is going on by people filled with compassion. Sewakunj Ashram provides such opportunity for the engineers working at NTPC Rihand Nagar, Shakti Nagar and Vindya Nagar.

Suman and his friends (all were ET-10 batch) came from Shakti Nagar. They all felt homely and got involved with children and enjoyed with them. Alok Dubeyji and Upendra Mishraji, both came with their wives. All of them were quite happy.
Center of service is run by the goodness of people in society, but simultaneously it also helps in making people good. Confidence in goodness gets stregthened by seeing live examples.

GM wishes students for their well being

Ashram felt privileged to honour P. Ramesh, General Manager of NTPC, Rihand Nagar. After many years of interval the GM has visited the Ashram. He was invited as the Chief guest for the Volley ball tournament going on there in Ashram compound.

GM Sir congratulated the final winning team and hounored them by offering track suite. Milan Kumar (DGM, HR(edc)), G.C. Pandey (DGM, TS) and Kanwaljeet Singh came with GM. After the game and related ceremony, all of them walked around the Ashram and visited hostels and met children.
I felt privileged and proud for getting chance to explain about ashram to the GM. I told him about the importance of Ashram and its contribution towards the development of tribal community of Sonbhadra district. He was happy to know about the performance of students. He also noticed the cultured life of children and wished to extend his helping hand for the betterment of Ashram.

Smash Volley Ball @ Sewa Kunj

Volleyball Match!

Teams from 9 villages of Sonbhadra District participated in the match which was organized at Sewa Kunj Ashram by Khel Pradhikaran, Uttar Pradesh. Contrary to the facilities available in cities, all these villages are devoid of basic amenities of life. Due to lack of connectivity and development activities in these areas villagers have to make their ends met mainly from locally available resources. Moreover some villages in these are also not well connected by proper roads. Sorry to mention, due to insensitivity of doctors and teachers, these areas are also lacking basic need of education and medical facilities.

Although players' lives are full of struggle, they all played with high spirit and the level of their performance are no lesser than what played under the guidance of coaches in big cities. People from surrounding villages, some engineers from Hindalco and reputed personalities were present to watch the match. The greatest charm was the presence of General Manager of NTPC Rihand.

This was an unique initiative by Government of Uttar Pradesh to develop game spirit among the villagers of Naxal Affected areas. Earlier this was executed as show case in the presence of higher authorities in district head quarters. No officers dare to go in villages to organize these games there.

But this time the scene is different. Current official is very dynamic to take initiative to go in villages and organize these programs. Earlier they faced problems as they have no local connection and due to age long neglect of Government they also lacked sympathy from villagers. Sewa Kunj Ashram took charge of this hindrance and became the middle men and this way games now are played in remote villages.

I will write about the meeting of GM with children of Sewa Kunj Ashram in next Blog not distracting the readers' interest in village game.

Model School at Chunar Gadh: India United

Under tha lap of nature, far from the sound of motor cars and gust of pollutants, one hostel-cum-school is run for tribal children from north-east state of India here in the Chunar Gadh. About four hundred and fifty boys are being given free education and hostel facilities. Chunar Gadh is an historical place and famous for the war waged for therincess Chandrakanta. This place is just located 35 km away from Varanasi. Quila of Chunar is a tourist place which is located at the bank of the river Ganga. This quila is also famous for encompassing the Samadhi of divine soul of king turned sage Bhartrihari.

This school is run on Gandhian Model. The chhatrawas is just like an Ashram which is self-regulated. Students are maintaining hostel by themselves. The day start with prayer early in the morning at five O’clock. Later according to schedule, students go for practicing Hockey, some for agriculture in near by fields, some for cleaning surrounding areas and some for cooking. One Goshala is maintained under the roof of hostel which is also completely taken care by children. Apart from doing all these activities, s

tudents are also cutting hairs of each-other like barbers. As Gandhi told such school will help in providing due respect and importance of these traditional, age old professon having same relevance in this modern world.

Although children are from north-east, they feel very homely here. There is no difference in their attitude, behaviour with the rest of India. They get chance to visit their home once in two years. This school helps in strengthening emotional bond and attachment of people of North-East with the rest of India which is very vital for the unity of India.

On similar basis one girl hostel for one hundred and fifty girls are also taken care of. One can imagine how much effort has been put by our ancestors to win the confidence of people who are now willing to send their children at such a far place for the sake of keeping their culture and faith Intact.

One evening with Harishji, the master mind behind all these creation was very inspiring. My father was so elated after seeing the work, he promised to get involved in all these activities after retirement. He promised to come and stay here. Dear friends get associated with such work and spend some time, money for the sake of country. Your life is going more enriched. We all have to work hard for the glory of our motherland and for the betterment our fellow Indians. JaiHind.
