A unique way of birthday celebration

Engineers from NTPC spent their Sunday in Sewa Kunj Ashram. Sri Niwas sir celebrated birthday of his one year child with children of Ashram. As most of them came with their family, it proved nice and enjoying place for their kids. They all played, ran here and there, laughed, chased the rabbit and enjoyed the cool, green campus of the Ashram.

On this very occasion Parasmani Sir, DGM Finance who was also came here, interacted with children, inquired about their family background,  and appreciated the arrangement. He also suggested to start education till class tenth. As he found the difficulty in arrangement of teachers he suggested for making arrangement for video lectures and online lectures. After seeing the solar system for lighting and pumping water out, he also wished to arrange solar cooker.

We wish more people would start keeping at this very place and would start caring it for its well being.

Policy Matters

The main focus of Sewa Kunj Ashram is to provide education to Vanwasi children. Through education Indian culture will get consolidated in the remote part of the country where even officials would not like to go. We have many times mentioned the achievement of the Ashram in terms of academic achievement of the children of the Ashram. But we are really far away from our targets. Although these children are brilliant, yet they are unable to get success like a general category students, because the Ashram lacks basic infrastructure of providing education (even they have no proper permanent teacher to teach). Thanks to the effort of great leader and emancipator of untouchables, Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar to garner some seat reserved for these children which enabled them to get successes in competitive exams.

It is really irony that Sonebhadra helps Indian Government generate thousands of crore rupees every year, this place lacks better transport, have no University and not a single good school for the poor. There is one Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya which to some extent provides quality education free of cost, but most of children are not indigenous of Sonebhadra and their parents just settled here for doing job in the companies. This district really requires reservation in development.

1000 People at the Ashram

On 25 June, 2012 people from all parts of Sonebhadra were called for admission of their children in the Ashram for new session. As people have recognized the importance of Ashram, they came with their children here. Unexpected more than five hundred children came with their guardians. After taking test and brief interview we selected about 60 students. But only four students will get chance to stay in the Ashram, rest will be sent to other similar ashrams in different districts of Uttar Pradesh.

Surjan:

What may be the actual reason, but Surjan aged 52, a resident of Kachnarava in Kon block of Sonebhadra got severe brain haemarrhage because of excessive drinking (deshi). He was very active, fearless and ready to take community work in his hand. He is poojari of his community. Drinking is not considered bad in his community (Baiga). In fact it is said that if you can't drink you can't belong to Baiga community.

Whatever would be his personal trait, he was a nice person for his family, for the community and an active volunteer of the Ashram. Although he was a poor man, he never asked for any thing. When his child fell ill, he struggled and managed himself for medical facilities, but unfortunately his son was not saved. Once a meeting was proposed and he was called to attend that and then revealed cause of his unavailability in the meeting his son's untimely death.

As he fell ill he was brought to a local doctor (called Jholachhap, not specialist). His hospital has not facilities for test. By mere observation he told that Surjan got brain haemarrhage and he couldn't treat him properly. But on request of his family he tried his best, Surjan came in conscious, talked but again fainted in the night. Day before yesterday I was with them at Duddhi Hospital. This is only hospital covering a large area of the district. There was no light, doctors were on leave, no facilities for test and doctors were in habit of referring most of cases to better hospitals. Hospitals in villages are really in hopeless condition and people are still on the mercy of God.

Finally we decided to go BHU. Although it is a government organization, innumerable patients, they gave better initial treatment and care. Why all want to live in city, because of this difference. Although Sonebhadra produces thousands of MW electricity, but their is electricity in Dudhi hospital, but there is AC in hospitals in big cities.

As doctors after consultation among themselves refused to take case in their hand,  we brought Surjan back  in Sonebhadra. Now his life is on the mercy of God with homeopathic treatment by Maheshji waiting for some miracle to happen bringing the life of Surjan back. But there was no miracle in the life of poor. He died living his children and wife behind him to face the future problems.

University with engineering and medical faculty in Sonebhadra near Renukut area could bring solace these souls and justice to the people of Sonebhadra.

ET-11 lights Sewa Kunj

Contribution of ET-11 batch is fantastic. They have done wonderful job to regularize evening classes in EDC under the guidance of DGM (EDC). The trend which was initiated at NTPC Shakti Nagar, developing core center at NTPC Mauda (UPAY, a name given to us) and now NTPC Rihand Nagar in more vibrant form because of active participation of this batch.
While doing commendable work here in EDC premise, they also frequently visited Sewa Kunj Ashram. They not only taught children their but also enjoyed with them by playing, listening music etc.
Sensing the difficulty students are facing at the Ashram, they contributed some solar lamps to reduce the problem of light to some extent. This is nice trend which would inspire all the batch who will come for training in future.
Whoever went Ashram felt the warmth of service got emotionally attached to the children and people living there. One of them expressed his feeling by these words, "Sir, we really enjoyed and felt the happiness which comes by offering things."
People are coming and going, but the idea that they would depart from this place forever really pinches all of us.

Holi-2012@SewaKunj

Holi with children! Boys at Sewa Kunj celebrated Holi with songs, worship and rejoiced by pouring colour on each other. Just after prayer early in the morning all gathered at one place with musical instruments. They started their Holi with Kirtan and Bhajan. Some of them were so verse in raising boli that others started dancing, clapping on the platform. The moment one stopped singing, the sound of clapping started diminishing, children were about to stop dancing, then some other students raised more emphatic bhajan leading all again in action. All looked very happy and in rejoicing mood. This continued for two hours till they became exhausted and went for taking breakfast.
Just after breakfast all gathered at shiv mandir, worshiped lord shiva and poured two buckets of color over him and then started pouring, throwing colour on each other. Some are fleeing, others are chasing with color. Some boys were rubbing dry color on face giving look of ghost. Again some started beating plates, some are singing and the rest were jumping and dancing. Some elders from nearby village came and rejoiced us with songs.
As usual all moved to the village where people were eagerly waiting to welcome us with color and some eatables. Villagers were drunk, but they rejoiced with us in cultured way. At the end following the tradition all gathered at the place where Holi was started by burning heap of twigs previous night. They worshiped God and aired the ash.
Holi is a festival of joy, reunion shedding all the grudges of the past for each other. All meet with each with smiling face, wishing well being of each other. On returning we all met to our acquaintance put some abir on their forehead and hugged each other.

Beautiful Way of Inculcating Values

For achieving the target of hundres quintal of rice to Sewa Kunj Ashram, Chapki, we were going door-to-door to collect contributions from household of NTPC Rihand Township. Being engineers of this company, all gave due respect to us and listened what the cause patiently. Repeating the same thing to every household seems boring, yet the distinct behaviour of individual household helps in developing broader outlook towards the society.

The experience at one household is worth mentioning. He welcomed us and felt obliged to see us at his door. Because of hidden instinct of serving guests, he asked us for food and tea. We are not in a state to take either food or tea, but paying due respect in return we asked for a class of water. When we were about to leave he told us to wait, went for consultation with his wife and came out with a five hundred and a five rupee notes. Instead of giving money directly to us, he asked his son who was a class two student to offer the money and to take bless.

Later we appreciated the beautiful and unique way of inculcating values among children.
